Adjustments That Promote Better Sleep For Seniors

Senior Living

There are various ways to approach getting better sleep at night especially as a senior. You may have heard about not napping for too long during the day or avoid eating a full meal before bedtime.

If you are facing trouble sleeping, we have got some important tips for you which you can try to help get a sound sleep:

Try a New Mattress

It is common for people to own a mattress for 10 years or more. While there is no such expiration date for these cushions, it’s a good idea to swap them out if it is been a few years and you face discomfort on your present mattress. Consider buying a new one when you move to a senior living home. It is recommended to have the mattress delivered right to your new residential place.

Change Up the Temperature

The temperature in your bedroom is a big factor in your ability to sleep through the night. Many people like to have a colder setting at night than during the day as this enables them to cozy up under a comforter without getting too hot. Try to adjust your thermostat from five to seven degrees cooler than during the day.

Reconsider Your Pillow

Are you more of a back sleeper? Do you lie on your side or stomach? What position do you sleep? When picking a new pillow, these positions matter the most. Side sleepers need thicker pillows to place their heads in a comfortable position that aligns the spine well. Those who rest on their stomachs can benefit a lot from a thinner pillow since this won’t extend the neck and head too far above the back and legs. Do ensure that your pillow is of the ideal size for your bed and that you are not using one that you are uncomfortable with. Also, it can be beneficial to sleep with a pillow between your knees if you lie on your side as this will prevent sensitive joints from knocking against one another and may reduce back pain by creating better posture.

Listen To White Noise

When it comes to sleep, the sound is another important factor. Even if you are sleeping peacefully, you might hear something which distracts your brain and can wake you up abruptly. Birds chirping outside, clock ticking or music from down the hall can upset your rest. So, as you go to bed consider listening to white noise or use a fan. Indulge in the blissful calm and have sweet dreams.

Keep these above-mentioned tips in mind in order to get a proper sleep at night and certainly, you will enjoy a peaceful sleep.
